Fruit Street School A Message from Principal Timothy Babcock:

"The lights of the new Fruit Street School glowed like jewels in the rainy night as parents of pupils and the interested public thronged the latest of Bangor's modern school buildings for open house and dedication ceremonies." This excerpt was printed in the Bangor Daily News describing the thrilling opening of Bangor's newest school that would house 540 students in grades K-6. Since its completion and dedication in 1954, teachers have educated thousands of students who have passed in and out of its doors.

Located on the East Side of the city, Fruit Street School continues to be a school highly committed to academic excellence. Students are fortunate to find in each classroom a teacher who strives to provide a positive and successful experience for all children. Our experienced and dedicated staff works cooperatively to provide student growth and improvement. Teachers learn and practice best teaching methods to raise the learning level of our students and to meet the standards of the Maine State Learning Results and the federal legislative challenges of "No Child Left Behind."

Through the years, Fruit Street School has experienced many changes, from building renovations to differing class sizes and grade levels. Presently, it houses 17 classrooms for students from PreK-3 with a staff of 48 full and part time teachers, kitchen and custodial staff, secretaries, teaching aides, and specialists. With a population of approximately 310 students, it is the largest PreK-3 elementary school in the Bangor School System, however, as with other PreK-3 schools in Bangor, it enjoys favorable student-to-teacher ratios.

In addition to grade level classrooms, we offer special education, Title I services, Reading Recovery, and kindergarten literacy groups. All of our students participate in music, art, and physical education classes. Our students have the option of attending before and after school activities that focus on reading, writing, math, art, drama, and homework club.

Fruit Street is fortunate to have a caring and dedicated community. Our very active PTO provides our students with enriching educational programs and presentations throughout the year. Special community events include the spaghetti supper in the winter and the ice cream social in the spring.

We are honored to praise all of the students, teachers, parents, and community members who have continually supported our efforts and helped us to make Fruit Street School what it is today. We are grateful for your support, encouragement, and friendship. As we celebrate our 56th year of educating young children, clearly, one thing has not changed. Fruit Street School remains focused on educational excellence and to provide for each student an optimal learning experience.
