G.E.D.

The test of General Education Development (G.E.D.) is a high school equivalency credential and is recognized by many post-secondary institutions and employers. The G.E.D. centers on mathematics, science, social studies, reading and writing skills. G.E.D. testing and preparation are free of charge.

Students begin with an interview to determine goals and needs. This is followed by general assessments of reading, language and mathematics. The student may then meet with a teacher to review assessments and design an academic program to help them prepare for the G.E.D. exam.

Once sufficiently prepared, the student takes practice versions of the G.E.D. in all subjects to determine their readiness to take the actual exam. The G.E.D. exam is administered on Thursday afternoon and all day on Friday. All students must be pre-registered and pre-tested before taking the exam.

The Bangor Adult Learning Center provides small group instruction to help students prepare for the G.E.D. exam. G.E.D. preparation classes are held throughout the day on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The G.E.D. program includes an employment and career education component, provided by our guidance counselor in conjunction with the Maine Educational Opportunity Center.

Distance learning opportunities are available for G.E.D. preparation.  This allows the student to prepare for the G.E.D. through on-line lessons with guidance from The Learning Center staff.

To find out more about the G.E.D. process, please stop by The Learning Center or call 941-6315.
