The City of Bangor
Bangor. The Queen City, gateway to northern and eastern Maine and the Maritime Provinces. Situated on the Penobscot River, which brought the first European explorers to its shores, and building on a rich heritage of lumbering and rugged enterprise, Bangor embraces the twenty-first century with pride and confidence.
With a residential population of 34,000 and daily commercial, service, and governmental activity drawing over 100,000 people, Bangor is an important community leader in the state of Maine. The Bangor Symphony Orchestra, the oldest continuous-running community orchestra in the country, and the nearby Collins Center for the Arts provides a steady menu of cultural events to the region. The Eastern Maine Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital provide the highest quality healthcare. The Bangor International Airport makes Bangor part of the global community.
Carrying a profound responsibility for the education of Bangor’s children, the Bangor School Department expects academic excellence from all students. A tradition of strong community support is evident in the diversity of programs starting in kindergarten and continuing through grade 12 and into adulthood. The system provides comprehensive educational services to children with disabilities as well as full curricular acceleration to the motivated student. Student participation is prized, and the system aggressively pursues co-curricular options for its students at all levels.
The faculty is outstanding, with administrative and teaching staff characteristically holding advanced degrees. Professional renewal is expected. The school system has established a reputation for developing a strong reading and mathematics foundation and positioning students for matriculation in the best colleges and universities in the country. Recent classes have sent students to all the Ivy League, the New England Small College League, and the University of Maine System schools, as well as other outstanding colleges such as Carlton College, University of Virginia, Emory University, and McGill University. Characteristically, over 75% of graduating seniors attend post-secondary institutions. Within one year after graduation another ten percent are enrolled.
