Extracurricular Activities
Athletic participation is an important part of
school life, and the community takes great pride in the accomplishments
of its athletes. Community, state and even national leaders can trace
their development back to their Bangor athletic experience. The program
offers a broad range of interscholastic sports for boys and girls,
including: cross country, field hockey, football, soccer, cheering,
swimming, hockey, basketball, track, tennis, softball, baseball, and
golf. Bangor High athletics has experienced outstanding achievement
during the past decade having earned dozens of State Class A
Championships in boys' and girls' swimming and diving, boys'
basketball, baseball and football. Academics supercede athletics, and a
2000 academic profile study indicates that 53% of the 614 athletes
received high honor or honor grades; which compares extremely favorably
to the state-wide average of 27%.
Our long-standing success in debate is marked by state championships
and individual accomplishments. From the Lincoln Douglas State Champion
award, to students who attend the Nationals, the Bangor School
Department produces high quality debaters. Bangor also competes in
Policy Debate, a two-person team where participants examine federal
governmental policy, and have enjoyed equal success in this arena.
Our students have also garnered many District and All-State band,
chorus and orchestra honors. Recently, ten of the seventy musicians
selected for the annual All State Jazz Festival were Bangor students.
The high school drama program has seen tremendous growth in student
participation and curriculum refinement with the addition of focused
study in theater and film. The co-curricular drama program has received
numerous awards, and has hosted regional and state competitions and the
1999 New England Drama Festival.
