The Bangor School Department provides comprehensive special education programs
and accommodations for children with disabilities. Ranging from
consultation and resource room programs which assist students with
disabilities in regular classroom settings, to hospital/homebound
programs, including diagnostic and supportive personnel, we offer our
special education population experiences based on inclusionary
practices and teachers sensitive to the individual needs of each of
their students.
As part of the Southern Penobscot Regional Program for Children with Exceptionalities,
the Bangor School Department sponsors three regional programs designed
to teach children with moderate to profound special needs. Students
from throughout the region attend Bangor's programs for students with
hearing impairments and multiple disabilities. Students who require
psychiatric hospitalization are provided on-site instruction in the Acadia Hospital educational program. Students with severe disabilities may access other regional programs in Brewer, East Holden and Old Town.
Students with Disabilities
Parents and/or students who suspect that they may have a disability that may require special education and related services under the Individuals with Disabilities Act, and/or reasonable accommodations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, should contact their building administrator to initiate procedures that will provide supports for their successful school participation.
