Supporting Learning:

Family Literacy Program assists adults with child(ren) under the age of 8 build their literacy skills through and individualized program including tutoring by Literacy Volunteers of Bangor. The program can help participants prepare for the GED, finish credits for a high school diploma, and get enrolled in a college program through the help of the Maine Educational Opportunity Center. BHS Guidance  As students and parents begin to plan for post secondary options, the Bangor High School Guidance Department has gathered a wealth of informative documents and websites for a wide range of interests and pursuits. 

CollegeAtlas.org is a comprehensive web resource to help families narrow their college choices with a very user-friendly online format. 

Big6  The Bangor School Department has adopted the Big6 for its Information Literacy curriculum. This site is a resource for parents and students to learn about and apply the Big6. 

THIEVES is an acronym (connected to the Big6) that assists grade 4-8 students with pre-reading strategies.

Bangor School Department Student Policies (Section J):

 

Excusable Absences

According to Maine education law, a student may be excused from attendance at school pursuant for the following reasons:

A. Personal Illness;
B. An appointment with a health professional that must be made during the regular school day;
C. Observance of a recognized religious holiday when the observance is required during the regular school day;
D. A family emergency;
E. A planned absence for a personal or education purpose that has been approved by the principal; or
F. Education disruption resulting from homelessness, unplanned psychiatric hospitalization, unplanned hopitalization for a medical emergency, foster care placement, youth development center placment or some other out-of-district placement that is not otherwise authorized by either an individualized education plan or other education plan.
