BHS STEM Academy Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Do you have a question not addressed below?  Click HERE.

Is there an entrance exam or other requirement for admission into BHS STEM?

No. Any student enrolled at Bangor High School may take elect BHS STEM. We are able to describe a school achievement profile that sets a student up for a higher likelihood of success in STEM, but any student can elect the program.

Can an incoming sophomore start BHS STEM in the fall?

Yes, but it is recommended that any sophomore wishing to start the STEM sequence schedule a meeting to discuss course selection well in advance.

Is there room in the STEM program for a student to take electives?

As seen in the curriculum overview, the STEM sequence opens up significantly in the junior year. The first two years are devoted to the critical underpinnings (Physics, Technology & Engineering I and II) for the Apprentice Research experience beginning in the sophomore summer, which essentially become the freshman and sophomore electives that complement the core courses (English, mathematics, history, physical education, foreign language). Some BHS students and families do opt for eight courses during the day, a practice that is strongly discouraged.

Will my child be able to participate in athletics if he or she does STEM?

Yes, the research program at Bangor High School has had many athletes, some multi-season, who successfully completed the requirements at high levels. Of course, the program requires a great deal of time that must be managed well, especially if a student has strong interests in other activities.

The summer research commitment seems significant...

There is no question that the time devoted to the apprentice research component of STEM is significant, particularly the 6-8 week summer component. However, each research situation is unique and not without flexibility. Those who have reservations about the summer research should seek a conversation with BHS STEM representative to discuss. The culminating experience in the BHS STEM Academy is the research component, which requires a great deal of time to do well.

How do I enroll my student in the BHS STEM Academy?

The STEM Academy is a program option available to all full time Bangor High School students. Enrollment requires only an expression of interest and the selection of STEM courses during the class registration process.
