On June 18, 2014, the gymnasium at the James F. Doughty School was named in honor of Coach Robert Kelley. Coach Kelley taught physical education at the school from 1958 to 1987 when it was Fifth Street Junior High School, and then at Bangor High School from 1987 to 2000.
Coach Kelley also coached baseball, basketball, soccer, and intramurals at Fifth Street Junior High School from 1959 to 1983. In 1969, he became Bangor High School’s Varsity Baseball Coach and served in that position until his retirement in 2000. Under his leadership, the team won 15 Eastern Maine Baseball Titles and eight State Baseball Championships.
“The Bangor School Department is so fortunate to have had Robert Kelley as a member of our excellent team of teachers and coaches,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Betsy Webb. “He has been a positive influence on many of our students and staff members for over four decades, and we’re pleased to be able to honor his service in this way.”
