Bangor High School has been honored to be selected as a participant of the University of Maine’s Congress to Campus Program.
The Congress to Campus Program was established by the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress to improve college students’ understanding of Congress and American government and to encourage them to consider careers in public service. Since 1996, former members of Congress have made more than 170 visits to campuses throughout the nation.
Former Congressmen Gil Guknecht (R-MN, 1995-2007) and Mike Kopetski (D-OR, 1991-1995) are visiting the University of Maine, and Professor Richard Powell of UMaine’s Institute for Leadership and Democracy arranged for the Congressmen to visit Bangor High School on Wednesday, October 8. The Congressmen will hold sessions with students in Economics, AP Geography, and AP Government classes, as well as BHS’ Debate Team leaders to speak about their experiences and participate in a question and answer session.
“We’re grateful to the University of Maine for including Bangor High School in this unique opportunity,” said Bangor High School Principal Paul Butler. “It’s such a privilege for our students to hear the real life experiences of former members of Congress, increase their civic literacy, and gain valuable insight into the legislative process.”
