Congratulations, Mary Snow School!
The Mary Snow School has been named a 2020 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence as an Exemplary High Performing School. Mary Snow’s six year data on state assessments are an average of 20% more students meet or exceed state expectations in reading than the state average and an average of 30% more students meet or exceed state expectations in math.
Mary Snow is the fifth Bangor school to receive this prestigious award. Bangor High was designated in 2001, James F. Doughty School in 2010, Fourteenth Street School in 2017, Fruit Street School in 2019, and Mary Snow in 2020. This is especially worth celebration given Bangor’s free and reduced lunch status is 54%. We do not know of any other district with as many schools attaining this national recognition.
According to edweek.org, there are 130,930 K-12 public schools in the United States. According to capenet.org there are 34,576 K-12 private schools in the United States. USDOE is recognizing 367 (317 public and 50 private) K-12 schools as 2020 National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence.
This recognition is for all of Bangor. We are especially proud of the students, who clearly understand the importance of doing well in school. The teachers and staff continually go above and beyond to provide a high quality education for all Bangor students. The parents and the Community take great pride in the schools and consistently support the district. The School Committee and the City Council prioritize high quality schools and the administration is committed to a core Bangor experience for all students. The focus on academic excellence and acceleration of programming are critical to the success of Mary Snow students as well as all Bangor schools.
The State of Maine annually nominates qualified schools within Maine.
The 2020 National Blue Ribbon Schools Awards Ceremony will be held virtually on November 12th and 13th. The 2020 NBRS schools are listed at https://www.ed.gov/
