Martin Luther King Day is observed on the third Monday of January to commemorate the accomplishments and life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King is known as a civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner. The Holiday in his honor was signed into law by President Reagan in 1983 and first celebrated January 20, 1986. Today, MLK Day is known nationally as a day of service and to celebrate civil rights.
