It is with great excitement that I introduce myself as the new superintendent of the Bangor School Department.
I feel that it is important to immerse myself in the local culture, communicate with our many stakeholders, and be visible in our community, especially in the early days of my tenure. Showing gratitude and recognition of all constituents is important as well as listening and learning as much as possible about the successes and challenges of the school department. Meetings will be set up throughout the summer and fall to share ideas and learn from each other.
Academic goals such as increasing the high school graduation rate to 90% as well as engaging every student, every day in higher order thinking to achieve an acceleration goal of 40% in all grade levels are key areas of focus. Student success begins with personalized connections between students, teachers, and administrators. Increasing co-curricular and extracurricular participation and creating a new mentoring program are areas identified to achieve these goals. Each school will form partnerships with institutions of higher education and local organizations to inspire lifetime learning and a commitment to community service.
Every member of the BSD plays a role in safety and well-being and I believe that every person is responsible for embracing diversity and ensuring equity for all. Consistent and continuing professional development as well as curriculum review will guide this mission.
The pandemic has made the past year difficult for many of us and it has shown the importance of recognizing social emotional well-being. As CDC guidelines change we will continue to communicate with you as well as resume family activities in our schools and rebuild our sense of community.
I look forward to the future and continuing our journey on the Pathway to Excellence.
Enthusiastically yours,
James Tager
