On behalf of the Bangor School Department
Like many in the greater Bangor community, we were deeply saddened to learn of an incident of hate perpetrated
against a community member of Pakistani descent. The Bangor School Department condemns violence of any
kind–including acts committed to instill fear in underrepresented communities. Safety and nondiscrimination is
not only an expectation, but at the heart of our commitment to students and their families. Like math and reading
competencies, preparing students to be members of a diverse global community is our responsibility and a
privilege we take in stride.
In the Bangor School Department, “diversity” is not merely a word. It is actionable, ingrained in our mission and
our obligation as public educators. Fostering a community that practices empathy and kindness requires ongoing
education and conversations at every grade level and in every school. Every student, employee, and member of
our community deserves to feel safe, respected and celebrated. Fostering a culture that celebrates
multiculturalism and equity makes us stronger and positions Bangor’s students to be tomorrow’s global leaders.
On the eve of a new school year, we reaffirm our commitment to inclusion through both thought and action.
In community,
James Tager
Superintendent
Bangor School Department
