Students in Mrs. Martin’s accelerated English Language Arts class recently welcomed guest speaker Mrs. Shelly Okere, a prosecuting attorney and parent, as the culminating experience of their study of The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton. Prior to her visit, students wrote argumentative essays taking on the role of either a defense or prosecuting attorney, applying legal reasoning to the novel’s central conflicts and characters.
Mrs. Okere spoke with students about her work in juvenile law, sharing real-world insights into how cases involving young people are approached within the legal system. She emphasized the importance of compassion, fairness, and rehabilitation, helping students make meaningful connections between literature, writing, and real-life decision-making. The visit provided an engaging and impactful conclusion to the unit. Thank you to Mrs. Okere for sharing her time and expertise with our students!
